What happened
- MLIT said “unauthorized external operation” of the system run by Hakuhodo, the campaign secretariat, may have leaked data on 23,918 individuals at 16,950 registered businesses (preliminary): representative and contact names, titles, addresses, phones and emails.
- Root cause: not disclosed; Hakuhodo is investigating and the access period was not stated. No leak of consumer (homeowner) data or other campaign years’ data was confirmed.
- No attacker named.
- All system functions were stopped, with only completion-report functions for one subsidy program to be restored; MLIT instructed Hakuhodo to investigate and prevent recurrence and warned businesses of phishing.
