What happened
- Charite said attackers breached the web server hosting its website and contact forms; affected are contact details of employees and students (about 46,000), press and newsletter recipients (about 1,500) and about 90,000 contact-form users (Aerzteblatt). Appointment-request free text may contain medical concerns; those users are notified individually. Patient care was not affected. Charite says this is unrelated to a PHP vulnerability that led it to take the site offline as a precaution the previous week.
- Root cause: web server compromise; method not disclosed.
- Attacker: not identified.
- Response: servers isolated, protections strengthened, criminal complaint, authority coordination.
