What happened
- Police told echo24 (17 Oct) the email went to about 6,500 contacts, many in security-relevant areas, including the Federal Chancellor; t3n (20 Oct) reports the account of the district association’s managing director was accessed and used to send more than 6,500 mails to CDU politicians across Germany.
- Root cause: police assume a phishing attempt; t3n says it is possible the managing director first fell for a phishing email, but this is not finally clarified.
- No attacker named.
- The CDU district association called in the LKA; police are investigating whether any recipient opened the fraudulent mails.
